"A Timeless Holiday Tradition"
DanceWest Ballet performs The Nutcracker annually at Pfeiffer Hall on the campus of North Central College in Naperville, IL. This DanceWest Ballet production has become a holiday tradition in Du Page County. In 2012, the company will present its 21st annual performances of the Nutcracker.
These performances feature principle guest artists from major international and national ballet companies, members of DanceWest Ballet Company, and over 120 children from the western suburbs of Chicago.
Guest artists have included: Amy Rose, former principle dancer with American Ballet Theater; Daniel Baudendistel, formerly of Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theater; Raymond Van Mason, formerly of Ballet West; Fabrice Herrault partnered Leslie Brown, principle dancer of American Ballet Theater and star of the major box office film The Turning Point. Other guest artists from Pennsylvania Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet have performed with DanceWest Ballet in The Nutcracker as well.
DanceWest Ballet presents performances for schools throughout the western suburbs at a reduced price. This allows many children who could not usually afford to see a ballet the opportunity to share in this holiday tradition. For many of these school children, this is their first experience with seeing a ballet. Attendance increases each year, with over 5,000 school age audience members attending The Nutcracker in 2003.
Auditions for The Nutcracker are held at The School of Dance West Ballet in August.
In auditions for ages 3-5, we are looking for listening skills, musicality, and enthusiasm. Dancers ages 6 and up will be given a ballet class with barre, center floor, and steps from The Nutcracker choreography.
Ladies ages 13 and up should also bring their pointe shoes as they will be given pointe combinations as well. Dancers should wear a black leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers and come prepared to dance. Performers sign a contract to perform in all performances of The Nutcracker, including both public performances and school performances.
